The 2016 vintage
The winter was mild without snow. There was not much rain in springtime, the summer was dry and the temperature was medium-warm with some sudden changes. The weather during autumn was average.
2016 is an excellent vintage for quality and for grape yield.
The Cortese grapes were picked from the 12th till the 30th of September. The ripening of the grapes was excellent. The grape yield in 2016 was 9 tons/hectare. The wines of this vintage have a high concentration of aroma and are very elegant on the nose. The acidity is well balanced and this is a characteristic of great vintages.

The vinification of the wines
As mentioned in the article on the estate, after soft pressing the must is immediately separated from the skins. Static decanting of the must at a cool temperature is carried out followed by fermentation at 16-18 degrees Celsius. Gavi DOCG Masera and Gavi DOCG Camporosso mature on the lees for 2-3 months while Gavi DOCG San Cristoforo matures on the lees longer, for at least 5 months. After cold stabilization the wines are bottled in springtime.
Yeast selected from the grapes of the estate vineyards is used for the fermentation.

Gavi DOCG del Comune di Gavi San Cristoforo
This is the top wine of the estate. Starting from the 2016 vintage, this wine is classified as “Gavi DOCG del Comune di Gavi” as it stems from a selection over ten hectares of vineyards all standing within the area of the municipality of the town of Gavi.
The vineyards stand on white soil of calcareous marl with sand and clayey fractions. The altitude is 250-300 meters above sea level. The age of the vines is over 20 years.
As this wine rests longer on the lees in comparison to the other two Gavi, it shows more complexity and it can age very well.
The colour is brilliant straw yellow with light greenish reflexes. Delicate nose with fruit and mineral notes, which makes it particularly elegant. Dry, crisp and well balanced in the mouth. Ready to drink, but perfect after a year in the bottle.
It is excellent as an aperitif, perfect with starters, fish and shellfish dishes. Serve at 10/11 degrees Celsius uncorking the bottle 15 minutes before drinking.
Average production: 10,000 bottles/year.

Gavi DOCG Masera
This is a traditional Gavi DOCG wine. It is a crisp, lean and fresh wine that is very pleasant to drink and that is very easy to match with food.
It is made from a selection of the grapes of 15 vineyards standing in 6 municipalities within the Gavi DOCG appellation (for a total vineyard extension of 50 hectares). The altitude is 250-300 meters above sea level and all the vineyards stand on white soil of calcareous marl with clayey fractions. The age of the vines is over 15 years.
The colour is brilliant straw yellow with light greenish nuances. Delicate but persistent notes of fruit and flowers on the nose, that makes it particularly elegant. Dry with a crisp acidity and a pleasant mineral flavour. Ready to drink.
It is ideal as an aperitif, perfectly suited for fish, light soups and hors d’oeuvres. Serve at a temperature of 10/11 degrees Celsius uncorking the bottle just before pouring it.
Average production: 120,000 bottles/year.

Gavi DOCG Camporosso
This wine is made from a selection over 12 hectares of vineyards standing within the municipality of Francavilla Bisio. The vineyards all stand on red soils of calcareous clay rich in iron and in gravel. This type of soil makes the grape yield naturally low and it enhances the bouquet in the wines. The altitude is 300-350 meters above sea level.
The colour is a light straw yellow. The nose is intense and fruity. In the mouth it is fresh, delicate and well balanced.
This wine is perfect with appetizers, shellfish, oysters and fish dishes. Serve at a temperature of 10/11 degrees Celsius uncorking the bottle just before pouring it.
Average production: 20,000 bottles/year.
